Day Three
Paranoia is, generally speaking, a bad idea. It has the tendency, if left unchecked, to become all-consuming. For Mr. Brightside, paranoia had become a party of his self-identity. He had learned, at a young age, that those who claimed to love him simply could not be trusted because, given the chance, they would inevitably betray him. Their reasons may be different, but in the end it would happen with each and every one of them. Of course, as the saying goes, it’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you. And in Mr. Brightside’s experience, his suspicions about those he thought he could trust tended to turn out correct.
As a result of his experiences, Mr. Brightside found himself alone in the world. If he was honest with himself, he preferred it that way. You can’t be betrayed if there’s no one to betray you. But being alone also has its drawbacks. You can get lost in your own thoughts. You can find yourself susceptible to ideas that would otherwise hold no sway over you. So when Mr. Brightside was approached to join a little group, he found himself all too eager to join. And as soon as he did, he felt his paranoia leave him. He knew he could trust these people. And he knew they were going to change the world, one way or another. He had hoped that whatever the new world looked like, it would have a better place for him. Unfortunately, he would never find out. Mr. Brightside closed his eyes, and sighed. He finally belonged, and then he simply… didn’t.
Meanwhile, Janie was not in the mood for anyone’s shit. Something was going on, and she was going to find out what it was, even if she had to crack a few skulls for her to do it. With her trusty pistol at her side, she knew that nobody was going to get in her way. If they did get in her way, she was not afraid to pull the trigger and take care of business. So Janie walked the streets, looking for answers to the questions that were nagging her. Change was certainly in the air, but she could not tell from where that change was coming, or who was angling for that change, or what that change was even going to be. But there was going to be a change, and someone knew what was going on. If no one else was going to get to the bottom of this, then it was up to her to get the job done.
Janie turned down an alley, looking for someone, anyone, who would get her closer to the truth. As she walked further in, she thought she heard the voice of someone whispering. She unholstered her gun and walked further into the alley. Soon, the voice became more clear. “Walk this way,” it whispered. Janie knew it was a trap. It had to be, there was simply no other explanation. Nevertheless, she pressed on. “Walk this way,” the voice whispered again. Further she walked. “Walk this way,” the voice said again. But even though she was getting closer, the voice never seemed to get louder. Then, as suddenly as the voice started, it stopped. Janie sensed something was wrong, and raised her gun in alarm, but by then it was too late. The thunderous boom came before she could do anything else.
